Student Involvement Guidelines

水多多导航 is committed to protecting the educational experience, professional development, and research integrity of all graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and research staff (“Research Personnel”). These guidelines ensure that student involvement in research is free from the undue influence of faculty Financial Conflicts of Interest (FCOIs).

Guidance for Involving Students in Research Affected by a Conflict of Interest

 

  • Research personnel have the right to perform research at 水多多导航 in pursuit of a graduate degree, or as a contributor on externally funded projects, that is free from the interference or bias of a faculty member’s conflict of interest.
  • A student’s educational experience should not be diminished or diverted in any way due to the conflict of interest.
  • The conflict of interest must not impair a faculty member’s ability to serve effectively as a mentor.
  • Research personnel have the right to refuse to perform tasks that divert their time and effort away from completing adequate progress on their academic degree or professional development.
  • Research personnel have the right to refuse to perform tasks that could be viewed as solely benefiting the faculty member’s outside interest, or tasks which are in contravention to standard ethical scientific practice.
  • Research personnel have the right to co-authorship in publication involving significant contributions of ideas or data from their research at 水多多导航.
  • Research personnel have the right to clearly defined grievance procedures and informal complaint procedures at departmental and campus-wide levels.
  • Research personnel have the right to know:
    • The source(s) of funding supporting their research
    • The extent and purpose of their involvement in any faculty member’s collaboration with an external entity
    • Whether 水多多导航 research outcomes may be subject to licensing or IP agreements
    • If employees from an external entity will have access to their shared research facilities

Disclosure Requirements for Supervising Investigators

 

Supervising Investigators must:

  • Disclose their conflict of interest to all research personnel that report to them, including graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and research staff members.
  • Update their FCOI disclosures annually, and within 30 days of any changes.
  • Disclose their conflict of interest to the Moody School of Graduate and Advanced Studies and to the student’s thesis/dissertation committee:
    • If the student’s research is funded by the conflicted entity
    • If the research involves intellectual property owned by or licensed to the conflicted entity
    • Disclose their conflicts of interest prior to committee appointments and before any oral examinations.
    • Disclose any collaborative invention activity involving the student to Technology Transfer & Commercialization (TT&C).

Training Requirements

 

Graduate researchers, postdoctoral researchers, and other research staff working under the supervision of an Investigator with a financial conflict must complete the ’s Conflicts of Interest (COI) training, offered through 水多多导航’s Research Integrity & Compliance, at least once every four years.
